Как это часто бывает у Уолша, два главных героя вынуждены разорвать связи с миром, который считали своим, но к которому в действительности никогда не принадлежали безраздельно. Хэмиш Бонд - плантатор, встающий на сторону соседей-южан, - на самом деле всего лишь матрос-янки, когда-то запятнавший руки в торговле неграми. Даже имя свое он украл у капитана, которому некогда служил помощником. Метиска Аманта из-за негритянской крови, текущей в ее венах, не чувствует себя своей ни среди негров, ни среди белых. Это скрытое деклассированное положение героев сильно сближает их друг с другом, даже не давая им самим возможности осознать это: так рождается одна из самых насыщенных и тонких «историй любви» в американском кино. Любовь тут превращается в череду испытаний, которые персонажи сами навязывают себе или друг другу.Для Хэмиша Бонда, как и для многих героев послевоенных фильмов Уолша, многое значит память: немалая часть сознания этого персонажа заперта в тюрьме воспоминаний. Воспоминания мучительны, но Хэмиш не может и не хочет от них отрекаться. Уолт выражает это влияние памяти бесхитростно, без пафоса и даже без флэшбеков. Ему достаточно 2 тесных декораций, одного патио, одной комнаты (восхитительные сцены появления моряка и признания Хэмиша Аманте), чтобы воскресить воспоминания персонажей и заставить их вспыхнуть, подобно молнии.
